Survey Shows the Sales of Small Cars Have Grown at the Fastest Rate

Year on year sales of fleet vehicles are higher than they were in 2013, and the sales of small cars have grown at the fastest rate.

Crawley, West Sussex -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/16/2015 -- This is largely related to the fact that UK companies have become very cost conscious. The recession has taught UK business owners to keep their overheads as low as possible, and one area they have paid particular attention to has been fleet costs.

In 2014, sales of small and fuel-efficient vehicles have grown. Sales of Ford Fiestas are up by 12.7% year on year, and sales of the Nissan Juke and Volkswagen Polo have both risen by 8.8%.

Firms are increasingly concerned about their green credentials and running fuel-efficient vehicles is a big part of many firms efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. A small car specialist in Crawley told us that interest in smaller cars has been strong during 2014 from private buyers as well as from business buyers.

For the most part private buyers are motivated to consider fuel-efficient cars purely because of economics. Since 2008, consumers have had less spare money in their pockets, which has led them to consider running costs more than they would have done in the past. This has driven interest in buying smaller vehicles.

However, recent falls in fuel prices mean that some private buyers are less likely to worry about fuel economy than they have done over the past few years. Business buyers are likely to continue to want to buy economical cars. However, they are going to be motivated more by the need to have good green credentials more than they are by economic considerations.

The drift away from fuel-efficient vehicles can already be seen in the fleet vehicle sales figures. Sales of the Ford Kuga are up by 74.3% and sales of the Volkswagen Tiguan are up by 30.8%.

Across the new car sector sales during 2014 were strong. Increased consumer confidence across both the business and private sectors has helped to fuel this growth, and many in the industry expect sales to continue to be high during 2015.
