Key Highlights
There continues to be progress made in regards to reimbursement policy allowing capsule endoscopy to become increasingly accessible to more people. France is willing to reimburse 30,000 capsule endoscopy operations; that number is expected to grow when both demand and the economy pick up. Other European Union members are expected to follow suit in upcoming years. Over 160 million people are now potentially reimbursable for this procedure, and Olympus, Given Imaging and Intromedic are working on expanding that coverage. Over the past several years, companies have made great strides in winning reimbursements from insurance carriers for their products.

Capsule endoscopy provides access to areas of the gastrointestinal tract that cannot be screened by conventional endoscopy. Bleeding and other GI problems in more distal areas of the GI tract can be easily diagnosed as the procedure screens the entire 30 feet of the tract. For example, Crohns disease can be detected quickly and reliably with capsule endoscopy, which is not possible with conventional instruments and procedures.
