Clinical Reports: Risk of Ovarian Cancer Can Be Lowered Through Flavonoids Present in Tea

A new research shows that consuming meals comprising flavanones and flavonols– sub-categories of dietary flavonoids present in tea, juices and citrus fruits - is associated with a low threat of developing ovarian cancer, the major cause of death among women due to cancer.

Fairhope, AL -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/30/2015 -- A new research published within the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition uncovered that women who drink tea consumed good amounts of flavonoids, a kind of antioxidant rich in tea, were somewhat less inclined to grow endothelial ovarian cancer—the fifth leading cause for death among women due to cancer.

Researchers looked over the nutritional habits of over 170,000 women in the span of 3 decades to get to this conclusion. Their best discovery: just 2-3 cups of black tea every single day linked to a massive 31% decrease in the threat for this lethal cancer.

Thus, how do these flavonoids lower the risk of cancer? "The mechanisms are not totally understood, but numerous flavonoids are anti-inflammatory, which have impacts on cell-signaling paths," claim researchers from the University of East Anglia. Therefore, among other activities, it is possible that they decrease growth of cancer and stimulate apoptosis, or designed cell demise of cancer cells.

Given that ovarian cancer is really deadly—the five year survival rate is around 44%—it looks like a smart option to hint back few at tea-time. However, if Oolong and Earl Gray aren't one's favorite, still women can reap the benefits of flavonoids in fighting cancer. Other flavonoids rich foods contain grapes, oranges, blueberries, citrus fruits, chocolates, red wine and onions.
