Harrogate, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/31/2015 -- The Remnant House, a seller of fabrics and haberdashery items, have responded to a report which predicts that investment in the textile sector will lead to an additional 20,000 jobs in the next 5 years.
According to Alliance Projects latest report, Repatriation of UK Textiles Manufacture, the UK textile industry could add up to 20,000 extra jobs by 2020, revealing that it's currently worth £9bn.
John Dixon, Executive Director General Merchandise, Marks & Spencers, said: "The report shows what a positive effect a resurgent UK textile industry has on job creation, skills and innovation on our own doorstep. That's why we're backing the Alliance report and the Textile Growth Fund and why we continue to invest in the industry through products like our Best of British range and our textile apprenticeship scheme."
The Remnant House, a Harrogate-based in-store and online seller of sewing fabrics and equipment, say that the findings underline the importance of not just investment but also the importance of the textile sector to the economy.
A spokeswoman for the company explained: "The findings from the Alliance Project underline how important the textile industry is. It will never return to its former glory but it's still a strong, vibrant and creative sector that contributes substantially to the British economy. More than that, it's part of our culture and history as a country.
Angela Spindler, chief executive of N Brown Group, said: "The first tranche of the funding has been allocated and while the results so far have been phenomenal, more needs to be done to drive textile manufacturing in the UK. As a business, we only source a small percentage from the UK, but there is a recognition of the growth potential in textile manufacturing.
"Retailers are desperate to increase capacity in the UK and this investment fund will allow us as an industry to grow that capacity quicker than we would otherwise have been able to."
