Kuran Is Updating His Classic a-Bomb Film, Trinity and Beyond

Vancouver, WA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/07/2015 -- When indie film producer Peter Kuran released Trinity and Beyond 20 years ago, he knew it would need to be updated some day. This cult classic documentary revealed startling footage of the first atomic bomb explosions, including the desert tests as well as the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This breakthrough documentary featured previously classified films that were restored.

Trinity and Beyond marked the 50th anniversary of the bombings and now Kuran is ready to dig a little deeper into this important part of history. His new project is Trinity and Beyond, Atomic Bomb 70th Anniversary.

"Since the original film came out, it has been essentially a living document," Kuran says. "I've been adding to it, finding new footage and using new restoration techniques. When we first started working on it, all we had was Photoshop, working on it one frame at a time.

"Now we have new programs that allow us to improve and enhance the restoration. In addition, new films are being declassified so they're available for the first time. Through the Freedom of Information Act, I've requested new footage but it can take several years to get them."

The 70th anniversary edition will not only include new shots but longer and better versions of the old ones. "We're able to lift the veil of degradation and see it as if it were brand new," says Kuran, a resident of Vancouver, Wash. "It will have a much more powerful effect on people."

It's not an inexpensive project, however. Kuran estimates he'll need funds for restoration, scanning, research, sound mix and post production.

In order to generate this funding, he has launched a Kickstarter campaign, which can be viewed at www.kickstarter.com/projects/1891773321/trinity-and-beyond-special-70th-anniversary-of-the. The page includes video clips from the original film, which Daily Variety called "visually stunning."

Donations of any amount are welcome. For a $10 contribution, backers will receive access to digital streaming of the new film to a computer or mobile device. For $75, you get digital access plus a credit at the end of the movie. See the Kickstarter project page for more details on other available rewards.

"By supporting this project, you'll get to see some really interesting images that no one has seen before," says Kuran. "And you'll help preserve a really important part of history."
