Latest Predator Deterrent Relies on Wild Animals' Instinctual Fears to Protect Livestock and Gardens

New predator deterrent device from Predator Guard helps homesteaders, farmers and gardeners protect their assets from wild animals without resorting to inhumane or lethal techniques.

Brooklyn, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/09/2015 -- Predator Guard, an innovative, humane predator control company, has rolled out the Predator Guard Solar LED Deterrent Light. Quickly establishing itself as a unique non-lethal predator deterrent, the device is designed to protect livestock and gardens from a wide range of predators including owls and hawks, deer, coyotes, wolves, and even raccoons.

What makes the Predator Guard Deterrent Light stand out is that it employs neophobia, an animal's instinctive fear of new or unusual things in their natural environment. In nature, different species exploit this fear to protect themselves. Some species of insects and fish have one or several large eyespots on their bodies. These spots are large, dark circles that resemble the eye of a larger animal. For instance, the Owl butterfly's wings feature large markings that mimic owls' eyes whereas young damselfish confuse predators with large fake eyes and a bloated body. As a result, predators are instantly distracted, startled or scared off before attacking or causing damage.

Studying this natural occurrence, ecologists have discovered that false eyes intimidate potential predators, as these animals believe they are being watched by a larger more menacing predator. As a result, devices exploiting this instinctual fear are being developed. To ward off nocturnal animals, flashing lights are integrated into devices that mimic predator eyes in the darkness. Over the years, this technology has proven to be a successful predator deterrent, which is why it was used in the creation of Predator Guard.

Drew Waters, Predator Guard's founder explained, "Predator Guard's flashing lights create fear, trigger an instinctive flight response, and makes nocturnal predators flee a homesteader's property. Wild animals learn to stay far away and instead seek out other locations to hunt and feed. Predator Guard deterrent lights offer an alternative to more lethal solutions such as poisoning or killing, while gardeners, livestock owners and farmers can sleep with ease."

To prove the efficiency of this mechanism, Waters quoted a recent study ("Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage" by Scott E. Hygnstrom), which involved 100 sheep producers from Kansas. Several of these farmers used flashing lights above their corrals and around fenced pastures to deter coyotes. In these tests, predation was reduced by about 89%. With the growing pressure for more environmentally friendly pest control methods, Predator Guard flashing light technology is becoming more popular, especially near residential areas.

In addition to offering a humane predator deterrent technique, Predator Guard predator deterrent lights are eco-friendly since they run on solar power - even during snowy days due to its slanted solar panel design. These LED lights are made from the toughest industrial components, ensuring zero maintenance and all-night protection. The device is also convenient as it can be mounted on any surface with a screw and/or magnet. Moreover, offered with a three-year warranty, Predator Guard promises value and long-term protection for many years to come.
