Cranston, RI -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/16/2015 -- The Bottaro Law Firm, which practices in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, is asking the community to learn about the possible dangers of alcohol consumption and evaluate their drinking habits in honor of Alcohol Awareness Month.
"As a personal injury attorney, Alcohol Awareness Month means a great deal to me. I see many innocent people who are injured due to someone who was drinking and driving," said owner Mike Bottaro. "While 'alcohol awareness' should not be isolated to one month in a year, I hope this annual reminder will help save lives."
Alcohol use is a significant public health issue and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) estimates that 16.6 million Americans have this disorder. The Bottaro Law Firm is asking people to evaluate their drinking habits because this can lessen the risk of alcohol use and the dangers of excessive drinking. According to the NIAA, low-risk drinking for women consists of no more than three drinks on any single day and no more than seven drinks per week. Low-risk drinking for men consists of no more than four drinks on any single day and no more than 14 drinks per week.
Excessive driving can lead to risky behavior, health problems, injury, and death. Among young people, underage drinking results in over 4,300 deaths each year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that in 2012, more than 10,000 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, which is one person every 51 minutes. The Bottaro Law Firm offers a private, no obligation consultation for people who have been injured by someone who was drinking and driving.
Drunk drivers are not the only dangerous drivers. The month of April is also dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and The Bottaro Law Firm is encouraging college students to be safer on the road with the "Don't Text & Drive" scholarship competition. This $1,000 scholarship award will be given directly to the student for use on education-related expenses. Applications will be accepted through May 1, 2015 and the winner will be announced on June 1, 2015.
