The British Leyland Princess Celebrates Its 40th Birthday with Gathering of Classic Cars at the Mini Plant in Oxford

South Glamorgan, Wales -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/23/2015 -- Motorists of a certain vintage will remember the introduction of the Princess. Making its debut in 1975, the Princess caused something of a sensation with its modern shape. It quickly became known as the 'Wedge' due to its space-age profile - high at the haunches and then moving towards a low and elegant nose. The Princess was brought in to replace the ageing 1800, a car whose looks could perhaps be described as 'challenging'. The 1800 also became known as the Land Crab because of its rather quaint way of moving along the road in a sideways fashion due to some classic British Leyland engineering.

The Princess was a more than worthy successor and was innovative in a number of ways in addition to its shape. It was the only front-wheel-drive executive saloon that British Leyland made, and it was spacious and comfortable inside. It was also actually quite good. The British car industry has come a long way since the dark days of BL, and you can find some great examples of British used cars at Howe Motors.
