Dallas Spine Surgeons Give a Few Words of Caution to Laser Spine Surgery

The expert trained Dallas spine surgeons are hoping to shed a little light on a newly marketed spine surgery procedure, Laser Spine Surgery

Dallas, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/24/2015 -- The expert trained Dallas spine surgeons are hoping to shed a little light on a newly marketed spine surgery procedure, Laser Spine Surgery. While laser procedures definitely have their place in other fields of medicine such as vision correction, it has not proven itself to be a substantial advancement in the setting of spine surgery. The Dallas spine surgeons at Spine Physicians Institute advises all of its patients throughout their DFW offices to take caution when it comes to this new "advanced" procedure.

Spine Physicians Institute's founder, Mayo Clinic Trained Spine Surgeon, Dr. Venkat Sethuraman elaborated on one of the methods utilized in Laser Spine Surgery "Those who are out there aggressively marketing the use of the laser in spine surgery describe it being performed through incisions that are 10 mm or less. There are primarily two laser procedures that are being marketed to the consumer. In one method, through either a needle or small incision the disc is accessed and then burned with a laser. The other utilizes a fiber optic endoscope that enters the spinal canal through the sacrum to give access to the disc that is then burned with the laser. We inform all of our patients that there are risks with both of these approaches, first, the surgeons are less capable of being able to visualize and directly decompress a compressed nerve. Furthermore, some of the complications that can arise with spine surgery such as cerebrospinal leaks and excessing bleeding become much more difficult to handle. We have also found that there is substantial literature that demonstrates a higher failure rate as well as greater risk of complication."

Dr. Sethuraman also goes on to state that "I would personally never recommend a procedure to a patient that I would not personally undergo and would never consider laser spine surgery as an option."
