Denver, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/28/2015 -- Colorado has legislated mandatory licensure for private investigators in the state, a law that will take full effect on June 1, 2015.
Currently, there are over 150 Professional Private Investigators already licensed with others in the process of testing. The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) which regulates the program tests PI's with a mandatory criminal background check and a specialized exam regarding the laws and regulations that affect Colorado private investigators' ethics and activities. DORA has two levels of investigators, Level I for beginning PI's, Level II, that requires private investigators convey a background with verifiable experience in their field or time served such as prior civilian investigations, federal law enforcement, the FBI, or the military police.
The change brings down a 2012 ruling that paved the way for voluntary licensing. The new mandatory licensing brings forth an unparalleled level of professionalism and credibility within the private investigative community. Most states regulate this industry, and professionals in Colorado believe the change will allow for a higher level of service for clients throughout the state by holding private investigators accountable for education and ethical standards.
Applications must be received by May 1, 2015, to be considered for the June 1, 2015, deadline. The cost for both the Level I and Level II private investigator licensure is $330. Private investigators who were voluntarily licensed under the old law must proceed with the new licensing.
