Dr. Aaron Spitz to Present on Telemedicine and the Future of Urology

Laguna Hills, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/08/2015 -- The 2015 Annual Meeting for the American Urological Association (AUA) is quickly approaching, and will be taking place from Friday, May 15, to Tuesday, May 19, 2015. This national conference involves lectures and seminars on cutting-edge breakthroughs in urological techniques, practices, methodologies and philosophies. This year, Dr. Aaron Spitz, the lead practitioner for Orange County Urology Associates and Vasectomy Reversal USA, will be presenting an AUA Consensus Statement on Advanced Practice Providers. He is presenting on behalf of the Public Policy Council along with numerous other workgroup members and AUA staff. This Consensus Statement covers many issues, including the use of telemedicine and the future of urology itself, which faces a potential doctor shortage and very strict laws governing urological practices.

Telemedicine attempts to offer a diagnosis, consultation and treatment to patients over the Internet on a webcam application. The use of telecommunication technology makes it possible for patients to get answers without leaving their home or jumping through the healthcare referral loops. It also allows for patients to consult with distant specialists without disrupting their lives to travel. However, the Consensus Statement reports that there are many pre-conceived notions and doubts surrounding telemedicine, one being that "patients will not accept it because they desire the human touch, and that doctors will not accept it because it does not allow for information…ascertained from being there."

Other medical experts believe that telemedicine "is often relegated to a solution just for underserved areas." With advances in imaging and tele-robotic technology, doctors and medical professionals can potentially deliver more thorough telemedicine treatments than ever before. Dr. Spitz and the rest of the presenters will be speaking in favor of telemedicine as a way to help bring patients and physicians together to control the incoming doctor shortages.

Unfortunately, the impending doctor shortage appears to be a very clear and concrete threat to Americans nationwide. According to the Consensus Statement, experts predict a workforce lacking at least 65,000 doctors for both primary care and specialty medicine by 2025. It further explains that, "in 2009 there were only 3.18 urologists per 100,000 in the population." As the worst statistic in 30 years, it explains why Dr. Aaron Spitz and the rest of the workgroup aim to offer remediation to this crisis.

In order to help combat this doctor shortage, physicians presenting the Consensus Statement are advising further autonomy for non-physician medical professionals in the field by helping them obtain the title of "Advanced Practice Provider" (APP). This includes advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and Physician's Assistants (PA's), as well as assistants, nurses and medical technicians. As it stands, PA's, APRN's and other medical professionals are required to work in a urology-based setting for a minimum of one year before they can become APPs. Adding more versatility to the APP/Physician team approach to medicine may help soften the coming doctor shortage.
