It helps the operator in controlling and monitoring the vehicle. Autopilot systems are widely used in aviation, missiles (unmanned), spacecraft, and shipping industries. They consist of three major components including the programmer or mode selector, computer system, and actuator. A mode selector allows the pilot to program the autopilot system and helps in interacting with avionics system such as GPS and electronics system used to communicate or navigate multiple systems. The computer system receives the command from the programmer and transfers it to the actuator. The actuator is the motor that physically moves the vehicle. Autopilot systems enhance a pilot's vehicle control capability and increases the cockpit efficiency by putting the vehicle into an auto-mode. It also reduces the overall operating costs.
