El Monte, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/13/2015 -- Different countries live by the different traditions, customs and cultures which make them different from the rest; this is also true with how people celebrate colorful festivities just like with the Carnevale di Venezia or what is more popularly known as the Carnival of Venice. This grand and vibrant festivities are held in Venice Italy each year which is concluded 40 days before Easter; a day before Ash Wednesday and this is referred to as the Mardi Gras.

Just to give a brief history of the Carnevale di Venezia, it all started in 1162 as a feast in honor of the victory of the Serenissima Repubblica in their fight and defeat against the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrico di Treven. With their triumph in the war, people started to dance and reunite in the San Marco Square. Since then the baroque carnival became a way to save the prestigious name and image of Venice all over the world. One of the highlights of the festival is the wearing of highly decorative and elegantly designed masks which made the Venetian festival well-renowned up to this time.

There are actually various types of masks worn by the people of Venice during the celebration:

- The Bauta (Bautta) which is originally a simply designed stark white mask but has now been transformed into highly gold gilded mask using specialized techniques; and the mask is designed to cover the entire face. The intricate design is integrated with an over-prominent nose, a very projecting chin, and a wide supraorbital ridge. The design enables the wearer of the mask to maintain his anonymity because he doesn't have to remove it even when he speaks or eats.

- The Columbina is also known as the Columbino or the Columbine. This is a type of mask that covers only half of the wearer's face which includes the nose, eyes and the upper cheeks. The mask is intricately-designed with silver, gold, gems and feathers and is worn by holding up the baton attached to it or it can be tied in place using a ribbon.

- The Medico della Peste, or otherwise called as the Plague Doctor, is designed with a long beak. This type of mask probably has the weirdest and most peculiar designs among all the Venetian masks worn in the festival. It actually started out as part of the advocacy to prevent and the spread of plague and diseases. The mask is usually white with a hollow beak and crystal-covered eye holes.

- The Moretta or the Servetta Muta which means dark lady and mute servant woman respectively. These are black oval masks with a velvet finish; the design comes with wide eyeholes but without lips or mouth to mimic a mute woman.

- The Volto which means face or the Larva which pertains to Ghost is the iconic representation of the modern Venetian mask which usually comes with a cloak and tricorn when worn. The mask is white and gilded elegantly with a black ribbon to tie it in place.

- The Pantalone represents a sad old man who is a father-figure. The mask is also designed with an oversized nose that is similar to the beak of a crow. And to signify the intelligence and dominance, it is designed with slanted eyes and high brows.

These are the most popular types of Venetian masks used for the annual Carnevale di Venezia in Venice, Italy. People do not actually have to burden themselves in creating the masks because there companies who produce and market high-quality Venetian masks wholesale which can be bought from local or online stores.
