Oldham, Manchester -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/20/2015 -- Leading UK supplier of e-cigarettes and e-liquids, iBreathe, have recently commented on the criticism the Irish Cancer Society has received over claims that e-cigarettes are used as a gateway to smoking cigarettes.
Director of tobacco studies at University College London, Robert West, and director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) in London, Christopher Snowden, have disputed a claim from the Irish Cancer Society, which has made a claim that 5% of smokers initially tried e-cigarettes before moving onto tobacco, with the e-cigarette devices being an initiator to smoking cigarettes.
Robert West said, 'The authors have not interpreted their data correctly. It is necessary to be able to rule out the obvious explanation that young people who start using an e-cigarette and then smoke are not simply the kind of people who would have smoked anyway.'
Christopher Snowden believes that the 5% figure is flat out wrong purely due to the basis that 5% of Irish smokers could have possibly and realistically started vaping before smoking, taking into consideration the amount of people in Ireland who smoke cigarettes before e-cigarettes took off.
Often commenting on industry news, a spokesperson for iBreathe said, 'The dispute highlights the problems the propaganda machine that has been unleashed against the e-cigarette industry. The figures against the facts show just how unreliable the data from the Irish Cancer Society shows just how little you can believe the facts being dished out. As it stands, e-cigarettes don't encourage smoking, they help people give up smoking.
We only sell our e-cigarettes to those over the age of 18, and our e-cigarettes have helped a great deal of smokers kick the habit, rather than e-cigarette buyers using the devices to move onto smoking at a later date. It just doesn't work out that way from our experiences.'
