According to Pure Travel The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient and miniature city within Athens. The Parthenon, one of the most recognizable locations in Greece, is contained inside the Acropolis. Currently, the Acropolis Restoration Project is nearing completion after nearly 35 years of work. The restoration is designed to return as many pieces from the surrounding slopes and floors to their original positions as walls and ceilings. Mount Penteli marble was used where pieces were missing or completely destroyed. The restoration will add new life to the Acropolis.
The Meteora is a gigantic complex of Eastern Orthodox monasteries constructed atop sandstone pillars. The monasteries tower as much as 550 meters above the Plain of Thessaly. While originally they were only accessible via ladders and ropes, today most tourists will be able to visit the Meteora monasteries. Only 6 monasteries currently survive, with monks and nuns currently in residence.
The Alonissos Marine Park is the largest protected marine zone in Europe. Among the wildlife, over 300 species of fish and more than 80 species of birds inhabit the Alonissos Marine Park. The zone is broken up into different areas with varying restrictions. Tourists can also visit the small villages on the island of Alonissos. Although the island is heavily agricultural, tourists are warmly welcomed.
