The Arthritis Foundation Provided Facts About Food and Beverage Items Blocking the Effects of Meds

Orlando, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/05/2015 -- There are people who take medicines with food or juice, and they do this often because it has become a part of their habits. Some people also do this to make pills easier to swallow. However, it seems that the habit is doing more harm than good.

The Arthritis Foundation has provided information about how some food and beverage items can block the effects of drugs. There is a thing called food-drug interactions that takes place when patients take medicines together with food or beverages.

"According to recent research, foods and beverages can have a significant effect on the manner that the body absorbs certain drugs or medications," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

David G. Bailey, PhD, clinical professor of pharmacology at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, stated that it was twenty years ago that he and his team realized how grapefruit juice could make drugs 10 times more powerful than they are supposed to be. Because of that research, today, there are over 50 medications that carry cautions about consuming grapefruit juice on their labels. Grapefruit, apple an orange juices are also considered to be effective in blocking the absorption of drugs.

There are five common pill blockers that patients should watch out for, including milk and yogurt. These two ingredients can block iron supplements and many antibiotics. Apple, orange and grapefruit juice, on the other hand, are known to block disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, drugs that are used for rheumatoid arthritis, and severe psoriasis and cancer drugs

"Coffee is also known to block antibiotic penicillin. Foods that are rich in vitamin K, such as liver and leafy greens, can also block blood thinners such as warfarin. Alcohol can block antidepressants," added O'Sullivan.

According to The Arthritis Foundation, it is recommended that patients should only consume potentially pill-blocking food or beverages about three to four hours after taking their medications. Patients are also advised to ask their pharmacist about the matter.

Experts suggest that patients practice caution in taking their medicines with drugs. This is important mainly because it can significantly affect the manner that the drug can work on the body. Drugs, such as pain relief medications, can be extremely helpful to patients, especially those who want to improve their overall condition. However, if they are not administered properly, they can not deliver the therapeutic benefits they are meant to give, or worse, they may jeopardize the health of patients.

Many arthritis sufferers do not only rely on pharmaceutical drugs to reduce pain and improve their overall condition. There are those who use natural alternatives such as curcumin supplements. This natural remedy is believed to be very effective in providing pain relief and improving the mobility of sufferers (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
