Researchers Believe Omega-3 Fatty Acids Can Potentially Increase Brain Protection Against Aging

Orlando, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/08/2015 -- Omega-3 fatty acids, which are usually found in fish oil, are known for the powerful therapeutic benefits they offer. Many people who are prone to, or suffering from, cardiovascular diseases rely on fish oil supplements. However, it seems that there are more therapeutic benefits of using the natural alternative.

Researchers believe that omega-3 fatty acids can potentially increase brain protection against aging. A new study has revealed neurological evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of the supplement. This finding is something that many individuals, especially those who want to improve their brain health, will surely be glad about.

"Cognitive decline is one of the most common side effects of aging. Alzheimer's disease is a great example of this decline that is affecting thousands of people from around the world," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Experts recommend increasing the consumption of fatty fish and plant-based food items that contain omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s can also be obtained by simply taking fish oil supplements on a daily basis. Those who do not like eating fish too much may consume fish oil as an alternative.

A team of researchers at the University of South Dakota evaluated 1,100 postmenopausal women who took part in the Women's Health Initiative Memory Study. The DHA and EPA levels, which are some forms of omega-3 fatty acids that are found in fatty fish, were measured in the red blood cells of the participants, as well as the volume in various areas of the brains. They used MRI after the eight-year study to measure the total brain volume.

At the end of the study, it was found that the participants with the highest levels of DHA and EPA in their red blood cells had an overall brain volume that was greater than those with the lowest. They also had 2.7 percent greater volume in the hippocampus.

"The hippocampus is the area of the brain that is considered to be the seat of memory and learning. It is also most affected by Alzheimer's disease," added O'Sullivan.

According to James Pottala, author of the study, there is a chance that fish oil plays a role in preventing brain shrinkage as one ages, and this could be because of several mechanisms. One reason, is that the brain is able to metabolize DHA into various anti-inflammatory compounds, which helps prevent cell death. It is also believed that consuming more omega-3s can add up two years of brain health (http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Fish-Oil-Supplement-Softgels/dp/B00O8NS20K/?ie=UTF8&m=A3OG9DHZ3GI58O&keywords=fish+oil).
