Taking a Trip to MARS: Military Archaeology Resources Stewardship

“Indiana Jones Myth Realty and 21st Century Archaeology” is proud to host a trio of very special archaeologists. What do they have in common? They all work for the United States military and promote the education of troops and civilians about the Department of Defense (DoD) cultural resources program. This group is called the Military Archaeology Resources Stewardship (MARS).

Phoenix, AZ -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/11/2015 -- Joining us on "Indiana Jones Myth Realty and 21st Century Archaeology" are members from MARS. No, not the planet, but their work is certainly out of this world. The Military Archaeological Resources Stewardship Interest Group is a group organized to bring together professional archaeologists who have interests in military lands archaeology and educate military personnel about the importance of cultural resources. The collective work of military personnel and archaeologists working to preserve archaeological sites and material cannot be understated.

The MARS-tians joining us are Dr. Duane Quates, Dr. James Wilde, and Ms. Kristen Mt. Joy. Dr. Quates works as a U.S. Army federal archaeologist for the Fort Drum Cultural Resources Program. Dr. Wilde has 43 years archaeological research, reporting, publishing, consulting, supervising crews, educating, and training. Over 20 of those years have been spent as a government (USAF) archaeologist and cultural resources expert. Ms. Mt. Joy is the Cultural Resource Manager for the Texas Army National Guard. In supporting the mission of training soldiers, her program ensures heritage resources such as archaeological sites and historic buildings and features are managed efficiently and military activities are in compliance with Federal and State historic regulations.

They created and participate in the MARS interest group with the Society for American Archaeology. The goal, as Dr. Quates explained, was to create and maintain a group "dedicated to creating a forum for archaeologists that work on military lands and to generate a dialogue between the military and academic archaeologists in order to achieve the goal of bettering historic preservation and cultural property protection during military operations at home and abroad."

What these archaeologists have shared with us is quite unexpected. There are a great deal of resources dedicated to the research, preservation, and protection of cultural sites. …by the Department of Defense (DoD)! The DoD stewards the nation's largest inventory of Federally owned or managed historic properties. Many military installations have artifact curation facilities. "The DoD historic property portfolio includes a total of 73 National Historic Landmarks, 694 entries on the National Register for Historic Places, and over 19,000 individual historic properties including over 16,700 known archaeological sites and 3,200 historic buildings."
