E.coli Testing (Environmental Testing and Clinical Testing) Market - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast 2014 - 2022

Albany, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/16/2015 -- According to a new market report published by Transparency Market Research E. coli Testing Market - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2014 - 2022," the global E. coli testing market was valued at USD 1.2 billion in 2013 and is estimated to reach USD 2.1 billion by 2020 at a CAGR of 6.58% from 2014 to 2022.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a part of normal flora of intestine of warm blooded animals, wherein the presence of this bacterium is considered as an indication of fecal contamination. Food and water samples worldwide are frequently tested for E. coli to avoid food or water borne infections. In spite of necessary precautions, every year epidemic of drug resistant E. coli is recorded in some parts of the world. The 2011 epidemic of Shiga toxin E. coli O104:H4 was one of the largest E. coli epidemics. The infection affected more than 1,500 individuals and has spread to other parts of world including the U.S., the U.K., France, Spain and others. The strain was also found to be resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins which restricted the conventional treatment regime. Another outbreak of E. coli O111 occurred in Japan in 2011, affecting more than 50 individuals, resulting in 4 deaths. Later in 2013, Mexico reported an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, in which over 90 individuals were reported to acquire the infection. Furthermore, according to an article published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, E. coli accounts for over 85% of all urinary tract infections. The article also details that O157:H7 strain caused more than 35% of the total infections caused by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli annually in the U.S. Due to the widespread prevalence of Shiga toxin producing and drug resistant E. coli, regulatory agencies globally have laid strict guidelines as preventive measures to avoid such epidemics. Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based methods are widely used for clinical sample testing.

Environmental E. coli testing market is led by Europe, owing to recent outbreak which spread across the region. Although outbreak was caused due to contaminated food, E. coli tests were also performed on drinking water samples to detect possible cross contaminations. The U.S. FDA revised regulatory standards for bottled water industry in 2009; in which, bottled water manufacturers must test source water for possible contamination of E. coli. In case of positive results, the source must be treated for elimination of contaminant prior to its use in manufacture of final product. The agency also demands to maintain regular record of such tests. This event has boosted the E. coli water testing market. North America and Europe collectively accounted for over 60% share of the E. coli environmental testing market in 2013.

Asia Pacific and Latin America are expected to be the most lucrative markets in the future. Currently, only about 40% of the tests are performed on ready-to-use kits. Rapid development in water sector and increasing need of better quality drinking water would support the market growth in these regions. Key players in the market include IDEXX Laboratories, Charm Sciences, HyServe GmbH & Co. KG, CPI International, Becton, Dickinson and Company, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc., Danaher Corporation and Roche Ltd.
