A New Diabetes Study Reveals the Heart-Saving Properties of Turmeric

Orlando, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/19/2015 -- Today, there are many herbs and spices that are used to improve immunity and overall health. One of the most popular therapeutic spices nowadays is called turmeric. This medicinal spice is widely studied, and is used for a wide variety of health purposes.

A new diabetes study reveals the heart-saving properties of turmeric. Turmeric powder can be purchased from grocery or health stores. The use of this spice is associated with a wide variety of health benefits.

"Turmeric is believed to contain a very powerful ingredient called curcumin, which has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties," said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott.

In the study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, the therapeutic value of the spice was investigated for type 2 diabetes and its deadly complication called atherosclerotic heart disease.

The American Diabetes Association published a study in its own journal, Diabetes Care. The title of the study is called "Reduction of Atherogenic Risk in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes by Curcuminoid Extract: A Randomized Controlled Trial". It was found that turmeric is 100 percent effective in the prevention of the development of type 2 diabetes among prediabetics during the six-month curcumin intervention.

Researchers in Thailand also conducted a new placebo-controlled, double-blind, and 6-month randomized clinical trial. The study involved 226 participants with type 2 diabetes who were divided into two groups. It tried to study the role curcumin plays in the prevention of atherosclerosis.

It was found that the group who took curcumin experienced an improvement in liver function, and this is entirely not surprising because the spice is believed to have liver healing properties. There was also a reduction in the weight circumference, BMI, body weight, blood glucose profiles, and lipid profiles. There was an increase in HDL-C from the curcumin group, too. To sum it all up, curcumin was found to provide some lasting benefits without causing harmful side effects.

Studies also showed that curcumin has the potential to reduce fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, LDL-C, and glycated red blood cells. It is also found to increase HDL-C. The study authors revealed that during the 6-month treatment, curcumin provided benefits on antiatherogenic risks in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

The use of curcumin was also well-tolerated by the participants. They concluded that curcumin extract can potentially be used for anti-arterosclerosis in the type 2 diabetes population. Curcumin supplements with a bioavailability enhancer are widely preferred in the market today (http://amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-BioPerine-Extract-Vegetarian/dp/B00VSVKJ8I).
