The European Union Steps Towards Stricter Data Protection Law

Cardiff, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/25/2015 -- On Monday, June 15th, all 28 governments of the European Union agreed to new European data protection laws, known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The GDPR is the successor to the 1995 Data Protection Directive. The new data protection laws will radically change the way businesses operate in Europe. The new privacy rules may be introduced by the end of this year after justice ministers provisionally approve the long-discussed changes.

A major impact of the new proposed laws is that any company operating in Europe, even if it is not a European owned company, will have to adhere to the new data protection rules. It is anticipated that this could cause major controversy between major US cloud providers, such as Amazon, Microsoft and IBM.

The European Union's latest view for new fines for breaches of EU privacy and data protection law will be capped up to €1m or 2% of the company's global annual turnover. For companies such as Google, who have been in the spotlight of data protection disputes, violating this new law could result in a fine as large as 25% of its profits. The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation stipulates that data breaches will need to be reported within 72 hours.

With the EU becoming significantly stricter in its treatment of data protection, it is essential that businesses have the correct procedures and safe guards in place. Tabernus can provide the safest method in doing so with data sanitization tools and solutions that can meet compliance regulations.

"With the European Union enforcing stricter laws, it has never been more important for companies and organisations to have a data erasure strategy in place when destroying confidential data," comments Pasi Pihlman, Director of European Sales for Tabernus.

"Our certified and flexible data erasure software runs securely whilst generating detailed audit ready reports and certificates of successful erasure for regulatory compliance," continues Pihlman.

Tabernus data erasure software v7.0 is certified by The Communications Electronics Security Group (CESG) Commercial Product Assurance (CPA) and is currently the only company within the commercial data erasure industry that holds this certification.
