SHEQ Centre of Excellence Releases Health and Safety Management System Implementation

Cork, Munster -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/29/2015 -- The Safety, Health, Environment, Quality (SHEQ) Centre of Excellence, a management consulting firm that helps clients with compliance in occupational health and safety and other areas, announced today that it has published the book Health and Safety Management System Implementation- A Practitioners Guide and Approach. Written by Centre of Excellence co-founder, Dr. Dan Gallagher, and published by Health and Safety Publishers, the book is designed to help organisations get certified to the international health and safety risk standard OHSAS18001. The purpose of the book is, as the title describes, to guide employers and their safety advisors who have decided to adopt a health and safety management system. The book can be described as a walk through guide with 17 chapters covering topics from the health and safety policy to management review. There are 10 useful appendices which are a mixture of checklists and notes. The style is easy to read for anyone interested in health and safety management, and is a useful refresher guide and prompter of ideas.

"Unfortunately, we live in a world where over 2 million people globally are killed on the job every year and many more get injured or ill from work, according the UN data," said Gallagher. "To make the workplace safer, companies can get certified to this standard – the only globally recognised standard that helps bring health and safety into mainstream management. This book uses simple language to walk people through what they need to do to implement a health and safety management system to a level that can be certified. If certification is not required, it can help users to at least be more compliant and improve their existing methodologies."

The OHSAS18001 standard is for health and safety what ISO9001 is for quality. Organisations who implement the voluntary standard, can expect to prevent or reduce accidents and stay compliant with myriad health and safety (H&S) regulations. It's also useful for keeping regulators happier, helping reduce insurance premi and improving employee morale.

The book is expected to save readers time and money. Many companies pick up international standards and want to get certified. The challenge is that the standard may say what the company needs to do, but may not say how to do it. The book fills in critical gaps, serving as a substitute or augmentation for consultants, saving thousands of dollars during a typical 15-20 day engagement to implement the standard. The book, which costs less than a typical monthly mobile phone bill, will help reduce the implementation timeframe and act as a learning tool for other people in the company to learn what's involved. Purchasers of the book can join a private LinkedIn group where further resources will be made available.
