In the early 1990s, the Worcester Wreath Co., seeking a productive use for some excess inventory, arranged to have many of the company's balsam Christmas Wreaths shipped to Arlington National Cemetery. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers who helped with both transportation and the work of placing the wreaths, several older sections of the cemetery that had been receiving fewer visitors were provided with wreaths.

By 2005, the program had grown to the point that it attracted attention nationwide, resulting in the founding two years later of Wreaths Across America as a separate non profit 501-c3 organization.
