Researchers Find That Rehabilitation with Physical Therapy May Reduce the Need for Knee Surgery

Orlando, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/10/2015 -- Surgeries have become one of the best solutions among arthritis patients who no longer want to suffer from pain, and want to be free from physical limitations. However, it seems that there are other solutions that are better than procedures.

Researchers find that rehabilitation with physical therapy may reduce the need for knee surgery. A knee surgery is often resorted to by amateur athletes who experience damage in their ACL or anterior cruciate ligaments in their knees. According to them, when the tear happens, it usually starts with a pop that seems like the snapping of a rubber band.

"Diagnosis for ACL tears is often confirmed by swelling, pain and an MRI scan," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

According to The Arthritis Foundation, patients are often confronted with two decisions to choose from. They can undergo a surgery to have their ligament reconstructed or repaired, which can help stabilize and provide support to the knee. The other option is to try physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Almost always, doctors recommend that patients resort to the first option, which is the surgery for ACL tears. The reason for this is that they believe in the possibility that a fast repair can help prevent some undesirable long-term consequences of having the injuries. These injuries include menisci, which pertains to the tears of the cartilage pads located inside the knee, as well as osteoarthritis.

In a new study published by the New England Journal of Medicine, it revealed that patients who tried physical therapy after an ACL tear experienced same improvements in function and pain like those who underwent immediate surgery. It means that many active and young adults could delay the need of or avoid surgery by trying physical therapy first. Doing this can reduce their risk of further knee injury or osteoarthritis.

The study, which was conducted by the researchers from Lund Univesity, followed 121 patients who had suffered from fresh ACL tears for two years. Half of the population resorted to immediate surgery and the other half got a physical therapy program. The latter was also given the option to have surgery later on, if they want it or if circumstances require. The participants were non-professional athletes and their ages ranged from 18 to 35.

Researchers found that rehabilitation has helped avoid surgery for 61 percent without the risk of compromising their recovery. The study demonstrated that some people may be better off with therapy within early diagnosis and they may not need a surgery.

There are several ways to reduce one's risk for knee surgery. Individuals who suffer from arthritis often use natural alternatives such as curcumin supplements, not just to achieve pain relief, but also to improve the health and function of their knee joint (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI ).
