National Inquiry Into Historical Child Sex Abuse Goes Forward

Doncaster, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/20/2015 -- This month sees the beginning of a national inquiry into historical child sex abuse.

The inquiry follows on from a series of revelations, including a report, published by Professor Alexis Jay, which revealed that 1,400 children had been victims of grooming and abuse in Rotherham.

A panel of experts was established last year to consider cases of child sexual exploitation and abuse, amid claims of an establishment cover-up and evidence that a number of authorities had failed in their duty of care to young people.

The inquiry, led by Judge Lowell Goddard, will cover England and Wales and has the power to force witnesses to give evidence. It also seeks to evaluate the extent to which both non-state and state institutions have failed to protect children from exploitation, and thus have failed in their duty of care. This is a crucial area of public law to address, and it is expected that many families and young people affected by the abuse, will be giving evidence and wanting justice in light of the tragic events.

About The Legal Team
The Legal Team is a key example of a body of legal experts with extensive experience in public law, quick to reflect on the announcement of the national inquiry.

They are frequent commentators on law, and had this to say:
"The news of a national inquiry is highly important and will help to facilitate the course of justice for those affected by child abuse and sexual exploitation. It will also help to prevent such vile crimes from happening again. We have expertise in cases where people have been let down by institutions – such as schools and social services, and are fully aware of the complexity of such cases. It is essential that when a duty of care has been breached, that this is addressed, and this inquiry is part of allowing for that, on a national scale. It is important that all involved receive the right legal support and assistance throughout what will be a very difficult time. ."
