San Diego, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/20/2015 -- As the saying goes, "Everyone is either writing a book, or wishing they could write a book." But according to Michael Rogan, founder of Self Pub Nation magazine, finishing a book is just the first step in a new author's career - finding an audience for that book is what separates a part-time hobbyist from a full-time writer.

In his new column, "3 Tips Writing a Book That'll Crack the Bestseller List," Rogan lays out a strategy people in the process of writing a book can use to increase their chances of creating a finished product that succeeds both artistically - and financially.

"Passion is great, and it can go a long way," said Rogan. "But having a publication plan, while you're in the midst of writing your book, means your chances of having a bestseller increase rapidly."

One of the strategies that Rogan outlines is to come up with a title, and series name if appropriate, that doesn't just entice readers, but makes it clear who the book is for - and not for.

"Ya gotta take a chance with your title. Put your stake in the ground. Make people mad, if need be," said Rogan. "Tell people how your book is different from other books in your genre and you'll find an audience before you know it."

Part of that connection with an audience is to honor the way they now consume books. "It's all about shorter books they can read on their table or phone - ya don't need to give 'em 'War and Peace.'"

But ultimately it's still about writing a book that delivers on its promise and entertains, or educates, readers.

"None of this other stuff matters if your book sucks," said Rogan. "But if you're able to marry these strategies with a quality book then the bestseller ranks is closer than you think."
