Leeulekker at Front Line of Right2know Campaign in Cape Town

Leeulekker representatives recently attended the Right2Know march in Cape Town to protest against the proposed Secrecy Bill

Cape Town, Western Province -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/30/2010 -- The Right2Know Campaign started in August of this year in protest against South Africa’s proposed Protection of Information Bill. It culminated in a thousands-strong march to Parliament in Cape Town, with prominent South Africans joining the ranks.

The bill, which is currently before Parliament, has been dubbed the Secrecy Bill by the media and has been condemned by many prominent South Africans, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, writer Nadine Gordimer, Prof. Kader Asmal, Zakes Mda, Pieter Dirk Uys, Prof. Max Price and author Andre Brink.

Leeulekker.com representatives joined the large number of protestors on the morning of Wednesday 27 October to march to Parliament and hand over a memorandum signed by thousands of South Africans.

The marchers met at 09:30 at Keizersgracht Street, braving the hot sun and gale-force winds, and proudly displaying their homemade placards and wearing the white Right2Know sticker. Members from NGOs such as the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), South African Freelancers Association (SAFREA), Ubunye and One Man Can (Gender Justice) walked side-by-side with members of the general public and singing protest songs.

The media representatives not marching were right alongside the thousands, documenting every moment with their cameras, pens and paper and video cameras. At 13:30 the marchers arrived outside Parliament, where prominent representatives from media and journalism, as well as the Muslim and Christian communities addressed the crowd.

Political cartoonist Zapiro and former Member of Parliament Kader Asmal were among the speakers. The event was rounded off by Right2Know’s representative who said, “If we are not heard today, we will march again. We will not allow the government to ignore us.”

The memorandum was then handed over to a representative of Parliament, who signed it in full view of the marchers.
