US Army Invites Roger Billings to Submit Phase II Proposal

 

Gallatin, MO -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/09/2011 -- The United States Army has invited WideBand Corporation to submit a Phase II SBIR proposal regarding the research and development of a low latency, multi-node communication architecture based on the concept of Low Latency Networking, a patented technology invented by Roger E. Billings and John A. Billings.

Phase II Proposal Submission is by Army Invitation only. Small businesses are invited in writing by the Army to submit a Phase II proposal from Phase I projects based upon Phase I progress to date and the continued relevance of the project to future Army requirements. The Army exercises discretion on whether Phase I award recipient is invited to propose for Phase II. The maximum dollar amount for an Army Phase II proposal is $730,000. The objective of every SBIR project is to develop a technology, product, or service that generates follow-on, non-SBIR revenues for the small business. These revenues could come from government or private sector sources, and could represent additional developmental funding in addition to product sales. The Army tracks the outcomes of all SBIR efforts to monitor and report Phase III progress. In addition, Phase III commercialization is monitored by Congress, the General Accounting Office, and the Department of Defense to determine the impact and effectiveness of the SBIR program in meeting its objectives of assisting participating small businesses. In particular, Congress weighs Phase III performance during its periodic reauthorization of the federal SBIR program. Complete and accurate reporting of Phase III performance data by all participating companies is critical to the future of the SBIR program.

A Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I was awarded to WideBand Corporation. The Phase I technical objective of this project was research and develop a low latency, multi-node communication architecture based on the concept of WideBand Low Latency Networking technology, a patented technology invented by WideBand Chairman, Roger E. Billings and co-inventor, John A. Billings.

In the HWIL environment, multi-node connectivity latencies ideally would be at or near zero to prevent the masking of properties of equipment and protocols being tested. While ideal from a theoretical point of view, multi-node zero latency connectivity is not practical. As the performance of equipment and protocols being tested improves, the latency of connectivity begins to mask and, in some cases, even distort test results to the extent that meaningful scientific conclusions regarding the items being tested are difficult to achieve. WideBand Low Latency Networking (WLLN) is applicable to HWIL test environments. Port to port latency of less than 20 nanoseconds is achievable resulting in an order of magnitude improvement over state-of-the-art InfiniBand products.

The Army is seeking to enable faster response times in military applications. AMRDEC funded WideBand Corporation on the modular, rapid, common Hardware-in-the-loop framework development technology through an SBIR Phase I program. It is anticipated that technology developed in the project will result in concepts and products which will greatly reduce latency in HWIL and other critical environments.

The technology proves useful in a wide variety of commercial applications that include cluster computing environments where the very low latency will produce significant improvements in performance of distributed or shared memory systems.
