Wimmer Reflects on Phoenix As He Gears up for Vegas

Atlanta, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/12/2011 -- NASCAR favorite Scott Wimmer returned to Phoenix this past weekend for the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Speedway. Wimmer and his Key Motorsports team went into weekend on a mission to rebound from their outing at Daytona that was ended prematurely due to engine failure the week before. Wimmer ran an extremely strong in practice sessions in the Key Motorsports’ #40 Chevrolet Impala and qualified in the 25th position. “I was focusing more on creating a car that I knew could be in contention for the long runs, which turned out to be good with so few cautions in the race,” said Wimmer.

Indeed through the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200, Wimmer and the #40 Chevrolet Impala would be strong on the long runs when the tires came up to temp, Wimmer would run times within the Top-6 overall on a consistent basis, and finished with 5 fast laps in the race.

Caught out by yellows at inopportune times, Wimmer found himself down two laps to the leaders. Although the car was good on the long runs, it was those long runs that also eliminated his opportunity to stay out under yellow to earn those laps back.

“I’m pretty confident that if we had one more yellow in the final 40 laps or so I could have gotten at least one of my laps back, if not both, and make a strong push for a Top-10. We had the car for it today, just not the right timing of the yellows to take advantage of them,” said Wimmer.

Wimmer and the Key Motorsports team now head to Las Vegas for the Sam’s Town 300 at Vegas Motor Speedway. Looking towards this weekend Wimmer mentions; “With the cars staying out on the west coast between the races, it creates new obstacles for the team to overcome by not being in the shop, but I think they are up to the task. More than anything, we just want to keep building on the results from Phoenix to continue to develop the new car and getting consistent good results the team needs to get the right sponsors on board.” The race will be televised at 3pm EST on ABC.
