Miss Earth Florida Asks Everyone to Switch Lights Off, Awareness On

Earth Hour will be celebrated on March 26, between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30p.m. and everyone is encouraged to turn off all lights, televisions, computers and any other appliances that use electricity to acknowledge and celebrate a commitment to do something more for our planet.

Miami, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/21/2011 -- No lights. No electricity. No problem. That’s the concept behind Earth Hour, celebrated on March 26, between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30p.m.

Everyone is encouraged to turn off all lights, televisions, computers and any other appliances that use electricity to acknowledge and celebrate a commitment to do something more for our planet.

“Green beauties” Miss Earth Florida 2010, Kelly Saks and Miss Teen Earth Florida 2010 Britney Ronda are commissioning Floridians to partake in this voluntary event to raise awareness of sustainability issues. Participation can take place from the comfort of your own home; all that needs to be done is switching the light switch from on to off for at least 60 minutes.

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and is organized annually by the World Wildlife Fund. More than two million individuals and two thousand businesses participated in the first ever Earth Hour by turning off their lights and taking a stand on climate change.

Since the first Earth Hour, the participation has grown from a single city to becoming the greatest environmental campaign in history with individuals, businesses and governments across 128 countries joining in. More than a 1,000 of the world’s man-made marvels and natural wonders participated in Earth Hour 2010, including: the Pyramids in Egypt, Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, Niagara Falls, Beijing’s Forbidden City, Cape Town’s Table Mountain, Sydney Opera House, Buckingham Palace and Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil.

Earth Hour will also be the kick-off for Saks and Ronda’s environmental awareness tour leading to Earth Day 2011, on April 22.

Throughout the month of April, the two beauties will be making appearances at different eco-friendly events throughout the State of Florida and educating the community on greener and healthier ways of living and preserving natural resources.

Those interested in having Saks and Ronda make an appearance at their event or interview them about the difference they are making in the community through their outreach programs, contact, Candice Nestel at 305.371.3774 or through email at candice@webcitygirls.com. -
