Researchers Investigate the Effects of Turmeric on Alzheimer's Disease

Portland, OR -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/07/2014 -- Turmeric is an ancient spice that is not just popular among chefs but also to proponents of alternative medicine. It is not just an ideal cooking ingredient, but it also plays an important role in the lives of individuals who suffer from conditions including arthritis. However, scientist continue to find that there is even more turmeric can offer to the medical industry.

Scientific studies showed that turmeric has the potential to have positive effects on the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease. Several trials and studies have been conducted to investigate how turmeric can possibly save people from suffering from the condition.

More than 26 million people are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease worldwide and the prevalence is believed to quadruple by 2050. Scientists and health experts find this extremely alarming and they have been conducting studies and clinical trials to find a possible treatment option for the condition.

James A. Duke, Ph. D, an ethnobotanist made a comprehensive summary of more than 700 studies about turmeric. He found that the herb can potentially counteract the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. It is believed that turmeric works by blocking the formation of beta-amyloid, which is a protein substance that is known to contribute to the cell and tissue loss that causes Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to blocking the beta-amyloid formation, turmeric has also been shown to reduce neural tissue inflammation associated with the disease. The Journal of Neuroscience recently published a study that supported the findings summarized by Dr. Duke.

“These discoveries may have a tremendous impact on the way we treat Alzheimer's disease,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan. “While there is a lot more research to be done yet, can you imagine a time when people can just take a daily supplement and potentially reduce their risk for Alzheimer’s disease? ”

Another study focused on the effects of turmeric on patients with Alzheimer’s disease that have behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. It was found that some patients experienced an improvement in their behavioral symptoms after consuming curcumin for 12 weeks.

Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is believed to be responsible for the healing effects of the ancient spice. Some people consume turmeric by adding it to their meals, while others use curcumin supplements for a more concentrated dose.

One of the major problems that experts see is the human body’s incapacity to fully absorb curcumin and other nutrients. Many studies have shown that a black pepper extract that can significantly increase the body’s ability to absorb curcumin, and recommend consuming the two together for best results (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/)
