SAFE Collecting Supplies Warns Numismatists to Beware of Counterfeit Coins

Doylestown, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/11/2016 -- The foremost ecommerce retailer of coin collecting supplies, SAFE® Collecting Supplies, issued a warning to numismatists urging them to be especially cautious when purchasing coins for their collections these days. The announcement came in light of a recent post by the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) indicating that a spike in counterfeit coins have made their way into circulation.

"Counterfeiting has always existed, but the problem is, copies these days are getting so good, it's even difficult for professionals to determine whether a coin is authentic or phony now," said Kurt Braun, who heads up SAFE® Collecting Supplies.

According to PNG, no types of coins are exempt from the uptick in counterfeits flooding the marketplace. Copies of rare vintage coins and bullion such as: Morgan Silver Dollars, American Eagles (Gold and Silver Eagles), Chinese Pandas and Canadian Maple Leaves, have been turning up left and right on eBay and other coin sites.

One of the tell-tale signs that coin may be bogus is if its lettering's typeface is different from the original. Slight as the differences may be, appraisers are looking for font discrepancies as one way to determine whether a coin is counterfeit or not.

The PNG also warned buyers to make sure they are making purchases through reputable dealers.

"It's always a shame when counterfeit coins flood the market like this, but the numismatist community will work together to pull as many fakes as possible out of circulation, leaving no coin unturned," concluded Braun.
