Shrink Wrap Plays a Role in Space Technology: Adpak Comments

Nelson, Lancashire -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/15/2015 -- A team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have recently announced plans to develop spacesuits with a design inspired by the fit and properties of shrink-wrap. The team have explored the properties of lightweight, stretchy materials – which shrink wrap, a polymer film which can be stretched to a number of applications on heating - has potentially inspired. Although the material the scientists plan to work with is anticipated to be a shape-memory alloy, it is anticipated that it will respond to heat and allow for consistent coverage, a little like shrink wrap does.

Shrink wrap is a widely utilised form of packaging – and can be considered of especial inspiration, as it is not solely used to package commercial goods. Recent projects incorporating the polymer film have included the wrapping of boats in marinas to protect them from bad weather, and containing pallets and industrial equipment to keep them together. The versatility of shrink wrap usage means that new applications and inspirations are regularly explored.

About Adpak Machinery Systems
Adpak Machinery Systems are prime providers of a range of shrink wrapping equipment, and understand the extensive benefits of this form of packaging. They appreciate the extensive qualities of the material and were quick to comment on the recent news:

"We think that these increasing innovations in spacesuits are highly exciting and we want to wish those involved the best of luck. It is also straightforward to see how shrink-wrap could have been a material of inspiration. Shrink wraps allows for a consistent tight coverage of plastic polymer film – meaning that it holds waterproof and dust-resistant properties. Those travelling in space are looking for similar features, as they obviously need complete protection. Although it's not quite space-age, we are proud to offer a range of shrink wrapping machinery which we would say is out-of-this world – for efficiency and price. It can be applied to a number of goods and you can speak to a friendly member of our team for more information."
