The Current Trends and Future Growth in Sodium Silicate Market

Transparency Market Research Report Added "Sodium Silicate Market" to its database.

Albany, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/21/2015 -- Sodium silicate, also known as liquid glass or water glass, available in solid form and aqueous solution, is a compound used in cements, passive fire protection, refractories, textile and lumber processing. Sodium silicate is a white solid that is soluble in water, producing an alkaline solution. Sodium silicate is available in various forms including sodium metasilicate, sodium orthosilicate, sodium polysilicate and sodium pyrosilicate among others. Sodium silicate is glassy, colorless and dissolves in water. Sodium silicate is not naturally found in nature and is commonly manufactured using a reaction in solid phase or liquid phase. Sodium silicates are made from high quality silica sand/ quartz and soda ash. The alternate process is based on caustic soda. Sodium silicate is readily soluble in water, producing an alkaline solution. In addition, sodium silicate has the property that makes it maintain stability in an alkaline or neutral solution. In acidic solutions, the silicate ion reacts with hydrogen ions to form silicic acid, which when heated and roasted forms silica gel, a glassy, hard substance.

Sodium Silicate has wide variety of applications due to its superior chemical properties. Sodium Silicate is used in detergent industry; soap industry; refractory industry; oil and petroleum industry; chemical industry as a flame retardant agent and light industry as ceramic adhesive, ingredient in electric welding rod. Soaps and laundry detergents are the largest markets for sodium silicate industry. The sodium silicate solution can be used in detergent slurry in an effort to control the viscosity at an appropriate level for powder detergent production giving required density. Sodium silicate solutions react with solutions of numerous soluble salts to form gelatinous precipitates. Sodium silicate solutions react with aluminum salts to form sodium- aluminum silicate gels, which can be processed to make base-exchange materials suitable for water softening. In addition, sodium silicate solution is used by the cement industry as general-purpose cement, especially for applications involving cementing objects exposed to fire or heat. Furthermore sodium silicate is used by the water treatment industry for treatment of waste water.

The growth in the end user industries is expected to be a major driving factor for the growth of sodium silicate market. The growth of detergent and soap industry, paper and pulp industry, water treatment industry and pigment industry is expected to boost the consumption of sodium silicate. In emerging economies, growing population and rising income levels are projected to drive the consumer good market, which in turn is likely to fuel the sodium silicate demand.

Sodium silicate has a global market due to its extensive application range. Asia Pacific is one of the fastest growing markets for sodium silicate. Republic of Korea, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and Japan are major consumers of sodium silicate in Asia Pacific. Sodium silicate consumption in the U.S. is exhibiting a marginal rate of growth in all sectors of application.

Some of the key players in this market are Nippon Chemical, Albemarle, PPG Industries, Guangzhou Renmin, Huber, Occidental Petroleum Corporation, PQ Corporation, Qingdao Hiwin Group, Qingdao Dongyue, Qingdao Darun, Shandong Sinchem Group, Shangyu Huabao, Shangyu Huachang, Shijiazhuang Shuanglian, Shanghai Yueda, Tokuyama, W. R. Grace and Co and Weifang Yanan among others. Sodium silicate producers are facing the challenge of rebuilding fallen margins in light of increasing raw material and energy costs. The major producers have raised prices in an effort to restore eroding margins.
