Solar Power Tops Coal Use for First Time

Wandsworth, London -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/26/2016 -- According to the Carbon Brief, the use of coal in the UK is close to levels last witnessed during the industrial revolution. Estimates from the brief highlighted that there was a 20% reduction in 2014 with figures continuing to decline to the lowest seen in 2015.

New figures from the Carbon Brief indicate that in light of the reduction and for the first time ever, more electricity has been generated by solar panels in the UK than coal in one full day. According to the analysis, 29gigawatt hours of electricity was generated by solar panels which was 4% of the usage total that day in comparison with just 21 gigawatt hours generated by coal.

Whilst the figures show promise for the future of renewable energy, solar power has yet to overtake that of coal for a full week but is well on the way to doing just that.

Whilst still being used for 10% of UK electricity supply, the use of coal in the UK has been in decline for a number of years.

A spokesperson for Stonewoods commented "Whilst it is refreshing to see that we are pushing forward with renewable and sustainable sources of power, coal still has its place within the UK and although coal use is in decline overall, we have not noticed the effects at Stonewoods where more and more people are opting for coal and wood-burning stoves as an efficient method of heating their homes."
