San Diego, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/23/2014 -- Surf Munkey LLC announces the release of an innovative earplug made specifically for hearing clearly during water sports activities (such as surfing, ocean kayaking, SUP, etc...).

Wet Plugz™ earplugs are the result of years of design and testing, as described here by Scott Orman, Founder and Director of Product Development at Surf Munkey LLC.

"We tried an amazing number of approaches, including micro-screens and combinations of superhydrophobic materials, but nothing was able to overcome the stickiness factor of water, and provide the level of clarity in hearing that we demanded". Orman went on to say "the turning point was when we we accepted water was going to cause a blockage, and decided look at how to resolve that blockage".

Wearing earplugs during surfing has historically meant sacrificing the ability to hear, and often resulted in simply foregoing using earplugs, at the risk of developing exostosis (also known as "surfer's ear", a condition that can only be reversed through a gruesome and painful surgery). "Even the plugs that let you hear well when you first put them in, don't perform well once you're in the water", said Orman.

"Wet Plugz™ custom earplugs offer a superior experience while surfing or participating in other water sports, with our patent-pending design", Orman continued. "Once we had the final design, I could hear so well, I found myself continually checking to make sure the plugs were still in my ears".

Today Surf Munkey offers Wet Plugz™ in a custom earplug format, but they are also working on a universal-fit version, to be available later this year.
