Berkeley, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/10/2014 -- Will Sobel, CEO of System Insights insists, “We need to build the new Industrial technology on common platforms. The reason is simple…no one company will be able to provide the entire stack. This means that companies that manufacture sensors will need to provide data to products that provide analytics and business intelligence. Robots and machine tools as well as measurement equipment will also have to provide data to drive the new revolution.”
Standards are the best way to achieve a rapid advancement of the industry as a whole. Standards like MTConnect and QIF from DMSC are perfect examples of infrastructure that provide real-time data from machine tools and sensors for the first and measurement and measurement plan data from the second. As we make progress on adoption, the entire industry will benefit because we will be able to leverage the common data and each company will add value in special ways. The synergy of these applications and the ability to predictively optimize the manufacturing processes is vital.
At present, we can get data from many controllers and sensors as well as from various other pieces of manufacturing equipment, but the adoption is moving much slower than it should. “The current sets of standards are incomplete and leave much of the application layers unaddressed…this must be the focus of a standards body. The application layer will allow companies to leverage analytical results and provide additional value by integrating information into other systems like factory planning as well as ERP and PLM systems,” noted Sobel.
