Its main attraction, the house on Tatum Park, was erected for Major Charles Thomas who was appointed lieutenant to the Wellington Rifle Volunteers Battalion in 1885. He and his wife built their lives around the estate, planting trees among its wellmanicured lawns and large rose gardens.

Eventually, a tennis court with a pavilion, garden ponds and the imposing front lawn were developed, with the lawn and the pavilion still around today. Garden parties and bazaars were often held in the residence, with the couple always willing to hold tea parties on Sunday afternoons for their friends who went there not just for the tea but also for guided tours around the gardens and the stables. With it's numerous cabins and lodges, the park eventually became a prime training hub for New Zealand scouts, with the lodges serving as accommodation for scouts and visiting family members.
