Humble, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/29/2015 -- Texas State Optical of Humble, Texas has recently added an incredible new technology to the line up of its already incredibly advanced eye care practice. The Visual Field Analyzer (VFA) is a device that allows your eye doctor to determine if you have decreased or missing areas in your central and peripheral vision. This is done by simply asking you, the patient, to look into the Visual Filed Analyzer, where a series of lines will be flashed in front of you. By clicking a button each time you see a line, your doctor is able to measure where you can see and where you cannot. This is important in measuring the onset and progression of many sight threatening eye conditions such as glaucoma.

In commenting on how the VFA is able to help with detecting glaucoma, Dr. Simon Yeung says, "Glaucoma causes peripheral visual field loss, so it allows us to screen for vision loss patterns that may cause us to suspect glaucoma earlier as well as follow for glaucoma progression. The specific type of VFA we have in our office, The Humphrey FDT visual field analyzer, has been shown to detect glaucomatous visual field loss 3 years earlier than other types of field analyzers. It also allows us to do quick vision screenings on every patient. To illustrate this point, it is interesting to consider a case in which we had a patient that came in for a routine eye exam and dry eye treatment, but because of the sensitivity of the VFA we noticed she had areas of vision loss. This led to the discovery that she in fact had glaucoma, and we were able to start treatment to prevent further loss."

This technology is an important addition to Texas State Optical of Humble because it significantly increases the ability for Dr. Yeung and his associates to quantify the amount of vision that has been lost, and in what area of vision the loss has occurred. Dr. Yeung explains, "Without a visual field analyzer, it would be difficult to quantify with any accuracy what exact areas of vision loss have occurred. Being able to track precise areas of vision loss allows us to see if the glaucoma is progressing."

Dr. Yeung further advises that, "If a patient notices that a particular area of vision seems to be missing or faded, or if they notice they have a hard time telling if people are objects are coming up next to them from the side, they should come and get their vision evaluated."
