Texas State Optical Takes Prescribing Glasses to a Whole New Level

New Autorefractor Tech Promises More Accurate Prescriptions Than Ever Before

Humble, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/09/2016 -- Texas State Optical of Humble, Texas, a local eye care clinic renowned for its advanced, comprehensive and patient-centered approach to eye care has recently introduced the latest addition to their practice, autorefractor technology.

In explaining how the autorefractor works, and what it is used for, Dr. Simon Yeung of Texas State Optical of Humble explains, "The Autorefractor allows us to measure a person's approximate prescription by bouncing light off of the back of the eye and measuring it when it comes back. This gives us an objective measure of prescription to compare to, and assists us in determining the prescription of those who cannot assist during the refraction, such as small children, who may not yet know how to speak, or may be too shy to speak to the doctor. This allows us to get both objective and subjective information while determining the prescription. It also gives us a starting point which speeds up the eye examination."

Although the primary use for the autorefractor is to assist Dr. Yeung and his eyecare team with finding a more accurate eyeglasses prescription for their patients, this technology can also be used for other things, like detecting and diagnosing corneal disorders such as keratoconus. Dr. Yeung also reports that the autorefractor may sometimes allow him to get an idea of whether a patient has any signs of cataracts.

Commenting further on the advantages of the autorefractor, and why his patients appreciate it, Dr. Yeung relates, "The ability to take a quick, objective measure of an approximate prescription is an important part of improving the overall patient experience both in-office, and with their new glasses at home. We use the autorefractor as a standard step for every eye examination we perform, asking the patient to simply relax their eyes and look into the machine, where they will see an image come in and out of focus. Within a few moments, all the measurements are taken. I think that patients appreciate how this technology allows us to shorten their wait time, and increase the quality of prescription we are able to give them."
