Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/09/2014 -- The country has a growing healthcare sector that is constantly being improved and modernised, which is also benefiting from the many construction projects announced in recent years. Over the last 30 years, Oman has invested heavily in the health sector and succeeded in creating a modern hospital system but there are key deficiencies in healthcare provision in rural areas, and a lack of trained medical personnel.

The majority of the healthcare sector is run by the government although the private sector is very active in the provision of clinic services and private hospitals. Total health expenditure was estimated at around US$1.9bn in 2012, the majority of which is provided by the public sector.

There is very little domestic production in Oman and the market is heavily reliant on imports. In 2012, Oman imported medical supplies and devices to the value of US$80.7 million, over a quarter of which comprised diagnostic imaging. The USA and Oman have had a Free Trade Agreement in force since 2009.

The government and private investors are both backing new healthcare infrastructure projects. These include a RO567mn publicly funded medical city near Muscat; another medical city costing between RO600-700mn in Barka, the establishment of two referral centres in association with an Indian hospital; and investment by Saudi Arabia's Shifa al Jazerra Group in medical centres and hospitals.
