The lower growth rate in 2013 reflects the stiff competition that local destinations face against international ones post 2011, when the economy has recovered, consumer confidence has returned and thus consumers feel more comfortable indulging in non-domestic travel. During the economic downturn, consumers concerned about the economic instability switched to domestic holidays in order to save money, thus vastly benefitting domestic tourism.

Industry Prospects

Domestic tourist expenditure is expected to see a value CAGR of 12% at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period. This number is higher than that predicted for overall tourism expenditure in the country, which is set at a CAGR of 8%, and much higher than the outgoing tourist expenditure forecast growth rate which is predicted to be 3% at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period.
