Westminster, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/24/2014 -- Undeclared allergens were responsible for the greatest number of recalls in the United States in 2013, causing significant consumer health issues, scrap costs, and sourcing conundrums. Jennifer Brusco, Marketing Specialist for TraceGains discussed three failure points that can lead to undeclared allergens in the company’s current blog. This article is part one of a four part series regarding allergens.
Food allergies are caused by the body's immune response to certain food proteins. When consumed, the body produces an immune reaction that is often life threatening. According to an executive at Food Allergy Research & Education, Inc., "Food allergy is the most common cause of anaphylaxis, although several other allergens – insect stings, medications, or latex – are other potential triggers."
According to Brusco, the three potential failure points that could lead to undeclared allergens reaching the marketplace include purchasing, receiving, and packaging. During purchasing, the goal is to have the correct statement at the time of labeling or package creation; at receiving, the goal is to have the correct statement at the time of receipt; and at packaging, the goal is to align the correct package or label with the product being produced.
