Westminster, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/17/2014 -- TraceGains’ hosted a well-attended and timely webinar regarding the recently passed labeling changes that will affect packaging design, ingredient choices, sourcing decisions, as well as confuse consumers.
According to the New York Times, the Food and Drug Administration for the first time in two decades implemented major changes to nutrition labels on food packages, putting calorie counts in large type and adjusting portion sizes to reflect how much Americans actually eat.
The overhaul comes as science has shifted. While fat was the focus two decades ago when the labels first were created, nutritionists are now more concerned with how many calories we eat. And serving sizes have long been misleading, with many single-serving packages listing multiple servings, so the calorie count is lower.
