Bunda, Tanzania -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/21/2015 -- According to the UBC news, "Joash Gambarage didn't put on his first pair of shoes until his Grade 7 graduation ceremony." As a poor student in the village of Mugeta, Tanzania, one of the most impoverished villages in eastern Africa, Gambarage borrowed footwear for the occasion from a boy belonging to a better-off family.
Today, Gambarage is a PhD candidate at the University of British Colombia (UBC) in Canada where he studies linguistics. His life now is a far cry from his childhood experience, which remains a common one for many kids in his home country. "Slowly but surely, Gambarage is bringing hope, education and opportunity to his village," reports the UBC news. In 2010, Gambarage founded the Mugeta Children's School project, in order to give poor children an opportunity to access free nursery and elementary school education and meals. The school currently fosters hope for over 100 children. Gambarage believes that education is the only resource that can help children to overcome difficulties and create better future lives. MUCS still needs many improvements, including access to clean water. As part of that effort, Gamabarage is raising money to address urgent needs that will help put the project on a more solid footing.
Gambarage and a team of UBC students have launched an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funds for a new well to serve the school and community as well as to provide other benefits to those in the area. Mugeta sits in a semi-arid climate area. Residents rely on water from hand-dug bore holes; this is unsanitary and unsafe. Surveyors have recommended a 95-meter deep underground well capable of providing 10,000 liters of water per hour. The project will provide safe drinking water, prevent cholera and other waterborne diseases and will prevent the problem of women and children having to travel long distances to bring water to their homes.
The funds collected through the IndieGoGo campaign will be used first to address the water crisis in the school and community, then to address urgent needs that will foster sustainability of both MUCS and the greater area.
