Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/29/2014 -- The mobile market has become the focus of att ention once again after France-b ased Iliad launched a USD15 bn unsolicited offer for 57% of fourth-ran ked T-Mobile US . The offer pre-empted an equally audacious offer reportedly prepared by Softbank -backed Sprint . Although T-Mobile rejected Iliad's offer, it was made clear that a superior financial offer would be considered. The fate of T-Mobile US seems likely to be sealed by the end of 2014. We believe Iliad would accentuate T-Mob ile's market-disru ptive 'uncarrier' strategy to bring greater pressure to bear on the market leaders. However, AT&T and Verizon would be able to leverage their wireline businesses to deploy converged services products and target higher value customers. Iliad would struggle to make headway in the low-value prepaid services market, but there certainly seems to be modest demand for such services.

Key Data

The market will support 361.9mn subscriptions by 2018.

- The broadband market will serve 164.9mn subscriptions by the end of 2014, a y-o-y increase of 12.0%. The increased take-up of on-demand streamed video services such as those provided by Netflix, HBO and the traditional pay-TV operators will continue driving demand for high-speed accesses. By 2018, there will be 209.3mn broadband subscriptions.
