US Bans Old Style UK Passports

Manchester, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/26/2016 -- New regulations have been brought into force which could restrict British travellers from entering the US with old style UK passports. Last minute updates to the regulations require visitors to have either a biometric or e-passport to be allowed to enter.

The new rules were ushered in on the 1st April and could see millions of travellers who have the correct documentation barred from entering the country. Warnings have been issued to UK citizens that they will be denied entry without the latest biometric passports. The new regulations are designed to aid in the prevention of terrorist attacks. This will affect people who have passports issued between May and October 2006, when e-passports were first issued.

Any British citizens travelling to the US must apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ETSA) but won't necessarily require a Visa. The number of people said to be affected by the new rules is believedto be thousands.

A spokesperson for The Safe Deposit Centre commented "Biometric technology has been in use for quite some time now and is one of the forms of security we use at our centreas it is the most unique and secure method of personal recognition available. As with any new technology, it takes some time to integrate into existing security systems. We hope this has been taken into consideration when the decision was made."
