U.S. Carrier Verizon Starts Taking Orders for New Samsung Note 7 Phones After Note 7 Recall

U.S. carrier Verizon has started to take orders for Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 7 smartphones after Samsung has recalled Note 7 globally due to battery cell issue.

Shenzhen, Guangdong -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/22/2016 -- It has been a while since Samsung recalled its Note 7 smartphones globally because of the phones' fire-prone batteries. In the United States alone, Samsung has recalled about 1 million handsets while the company has recalled at least 2.5 million across the globe. During the Note 7 recall, Samsung has offered more than one way for Note 7 owners to return or exchange the faulty Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Many enterprises including Verizon (U.S. carrier Verizon Communications Inc), have stopped sales of Note 7 earlier due to the recall, but now Verizon has begun taking orders for Samsung's new Galaxy Note 7 smartphones.

According to a statement on Verizon's website, the new Note 7 phones have been approved by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for all purchases and exchanges, and Verizon has the Samsung device available for sale starting from September 21. However, as Verizon – the largest U.S. wireless carrier warned, the initial quantities of new Note 7 phone could be limited.

The phone battery's susceptibility to catch fire has greatly damaged the image of Samsung Electronics, which is a setback for the company that is looking to take over market share from strong rivals like Apple that recently released the water-resistant iPhone 7. Samsung confirmed on September 20 that it had shipped more than 500,000 new Note 7 phones to U.S. carriers and retailers. Thus affected people are able to exchange the recalled phones starting from September 21, but the exact date for new sales is still not clear.

Same as Verizon, the rival carrier Sprint also made a statement on its website that the Note 7 will be available for order, and provided a list of stores where customers can pick up a new handset by appointment.

In order not to purchase a faulty Note 7 Phone, Samsung has launched a new site for people to enter an IMEI number to see if a Galaxy Note 7 is affected. Samsung is also introducing a green battery icon on safe Galaxy Note 7 devices. The third way to tell whether or not the phone is safe is to examine the packaging. On the phone packaging box, Samsung is marking new Galaxy Note 7 devices with a square symbol.

As for new Note 7 sales plans in the U.S., Samsung did not immediately respond, but the company did previously say that it will resume new sales in South Korea starting from September 28 and that sales in Australia and Singapore would resume sometime in October.
