New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/14/2017 -- While more than 10% of Americans work in the nonprofit sector, leadership gurus mostly ignore them. Traditional sources of information about leadership, like schools, and online resources like Wikipedia and Google, simply don't have the content to help today's nonprofit leaders excel, leaving most of them to learn from first-hand experience. That's why Vivien Hoexter and Linda C. Hartley, principals of H2Growth Strategies, decided to research nonprofit leadership. They interviewed 47 top nonprofit change-makers from organizations such as the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Ford Foundation, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Goodwill Industries International, Share Our Strength, Nature Conservancy, Bank Street College of Education and PBS, about what distinguishes nonprofit leadership from for-profit leadership.
One of the unexpected findings is that over 20% of the leaders interviewed chose to work in the nonprofit sector because of personal tragedies early in life. They learned empathy and emotional intelligence from having a sibling with serious developmental disabilities or experiencing the foster care system firsthand. And they chose to dedicate their lives to transforming society to work better for all people. Although it is not necessary to experience a tragedy to make a successful career in the sector, this finding does shed light on a key characteristic of nonprofit leaders.
