WhatsApp Launches a Native Desktop Messaging App for Windows and Mac

WhatsApp desktop app for PC/Mac was released several days ago, which supports desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more. And all messages are synced with mobile devices as well.

Shenzhen, Guangdong -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/15/2016 -- Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp announced two days ago that it had launched a native desktop app that's available for both Windows and Mac, which mirrors conversations and messages from users' mobile devices.

"While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future," WhatsApp said at the time.

In its official blog post, the company introduced that the new WhatsApp desktop version supports desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more. All messages are synced with WhatsApp's mobile devices, as well.

The desktop app works much like WhatsApp Web. People can send messages, attachments, record voice messages, send pictures, and manage the message history. And the new WhatsApp desktop application is available for users running Windows 8 or Mac OS 10.9 and above, and can be synced with WhatsApp on users' mobile device.

People are able to visit the official website of WhatsApp to download and install WhatsApp on PC/Mac. After installing the app, people have to scan a QR code using the WhatsApp app on their mobile device. The feature will be located under "Settings" > "WhatsApp Web." If the QR code is recognized, people will be authenticated on the desktop. In the past, the data transfer software are widely used for transferring messages between phone and computers, like iTansfer, CopyTrans. Now WhatsApp for desktop enables to connect user's phone to sync messages directly, so potentially quite a bit of data will be transmitted. The company advises that people connect their iPhone or Android phone to Wi-Fi.

WhatsApp developed the new product with innovation and serious labor, which may be aimed at helping boost the performance and accelerate growth. WhatsApp has already counted more than 1 billion monthly active users on February 1, 2016, but that number could soon be surpassed by its messaging cousin - Facebook Messenger, which has already debuted a standalone version of its service for the Web and PCs.
